re warranties, depends on a value reported by equipment under warranty; there's really no other way to do it, though, unless gps reporting to 3rd party becomes primary value.

re all other (and my personal experience buying equipment out of warranty), the odometer always provides an interesting starting point - a first-pass filter to limit the pool of options that are then scrutinized in more detail.
