I kind of see it, but honestly I don't think it had that huge of an effect compared to later developments.

You can see on the map that East Germany is depopulated - in 1948 it had 19 million people, while today it only has 12 million. This has to make a substantial impact. Also the Rhineland and Ruhr were massive mineral producers, which meant that the coal and steel industry were located there, which meant that secondary industries sprung up there as well, which meant there was a lot of migration and development in the area.
